What exactly is Polonia?

I was convinced that everyone knew what Polonia was. However, I found that this was not the case.

Many people do not know that "Poland", in the Polish language, is "Polska", and even think that the word "Polonia" is the official name of Poland! It is true that in Spanish, Italian, Portuguese or Romanian, Poland is actually called Polonia.

We descendants of Poles know (in general) that Polonia is not Poland but the collection of all the descendants of Polish emigrants, whoever they may be. This name therefore refers to the Polish diaspora.

Unfortunately, not all descendants of Polish emigrants know that they are part of this huge community which bears the name of Polonia! Because today, this pretty word designates the official groups, organized according to Polish customs and culture which adhere to this Polonity.
